Abortion is health care - not a crime. The Reproductive Health Act and the repeal of Parental Notice of Abortion places decision making in the hands of a patient and their health care provider – where it belongs – rather than mandate how care should be given and threatening prison time for doctors providing care to their patients.
The Reproductive Health Act (RHA) recognizes reproductive health care as a fundamental right and repeals the Illinois Abortion Act of 1975. Without the RHA, if Roe is overturned Illinois could have:
- Mandatory spousal consent for abortion
- Twenty-four hour waiting periods
- Bans on assisted reproductive techniques like in vitro
- Doctor consent committees
The repeal of the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, would remove the requirement that a health care provider notify parent, legal guardian, grandparent, or step-parent living in the household at least 48 hours prior to performing an abortion for a patient under 18. A family conversation shouldn't be legislated. Most young people already seek the counsel of their parent or guardian when it comes to a decision like this. If they don't, there's usually a real good reason.
Time is running out, call your representative now. Urge them to vote yes on the Reproductive Health Act and the repeal of the Parental Notice of Abortion Act.
