Trump Administration Forces Planned Parenthood Out of Title X Program
The Trump-Pence administration’s nationwide gag rule is destroying Title X, the nation’s only dedicated program for affordable birth control and other essential reproductive health care — and for the first time in nearly 50 years of the program, Planned Parenthood is out of Title X. Health care access is now at risk for those struggling to make ends meet — and Congress is our only recourse.
The gag rule dismantles the Title X program.
Under the Trump administration’s gag rule, doctors and nurses in the program are not allowed to refer their patients for abortion — a violation of good medical ethics Planned Parenthood won’t be bullied into accepting. Planned Parenthood is the largest provider in Title X, serving approximately 40% of the 4 million people who get care through Title X. And it’s not just Planned Parenthood that’s affected by the gag rule. Eight states and other health care providers, including the only Title X grantee in Maine, have made clear that they cannot stay in the program under the gag rule. Together with Planned Parenthood, these entities serve nearly half the patients in the program. The Trump administration is decimating Title X as we know it.
The majority of patients who get care through Title X identify as Black, Hispanic, or Latino. 65% of patients are younger than 30 years old.
Title X is meant to provide affordable reproductive health care and cover gaps in health care access — especially for people living in rural or underserved areas. If you’ve ever received reduced-cost or free services at Planned Parenthood, it could have been through Title X.
3.1 million people access contraception through Title X.
Methods like IUDs, birth control pills, shots, and more.
At the same time, while the Trump administration trying to force qualified, expert health care providers out of our nation’s program for affordable birth control, it’s also funding groups like Obria, an organization that has made clear they “would not provide contraception.”
When public health funds are cut, people go without care.
We have seen the disastrous consequences when health care at Planned Parenthood is out of reach.
STD rates spiked in Iowa after four health center closures, and rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia have drastically increased in New Hampshire after the state cut funding for STI testing and treatment in 2012.
The Gag Rule Does 3 Things:
1.
“Gag” health care providers in the Title X health care program
by making it illegal for them to tell their patients how and where they can access abortion safely and legally.
2.
Prevent patients from getting full and accurate information
about all of their options. Planned Parenthood won’t withhold critical information from our patients because of our commitment to ethical patient care
3.
Add new restrictions specifically designed to block patients
from coming to Planned Parenthood.
