Cleveland, OH -- Today volunteers from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio spread throughout the city of Cleveland, surrounding key landmarks, wearing pink shirts, chanting, holding signs, wearing a giant birth control costume, and protesting the repeated attacks against Planned Parenthood and reproductive health care.
“We’re tired of seeing basic health care come under attack,” said Ann Ruege, a volunteer from Columbus, OH. “That’s why we’re standing up here, taking action to protect access to Planned Parenthood. We’re fighting for access to abortion, but also preventing infant mortality, good sex education, and basic health care. I want to support my community any way I can, and I believe in standing up for those who can’t be here today.”
This action comes as access to health care at Planned Parenthood has come under repeated attack. Politicians in Ohio have passed at least 17 restrictions against women’s access to health care. And across the country in statehouses, Congress, and even in the Republican Party platform, access to basic health care -- cancer screenings, well-woman exams, birth control and more -- has been under attack.
“People kept coming up to us and thanking us, and cheering along,” said Briana Walker, a volunteer from Cleveland, OH. “They even wanted to take pictures with us. It was awesome to see so much support on the streets of Cleveland.”
