Washington, DC -- This morning Hillary Clinton reaffirmed her longstanding commitment to protecting women’s access to safe, legal abortion and to the full range of reproductive health care at Planned Parenthood. This is in stark contrast to GOP candidates, who have made it clear they will stop at nothing to ban abortion and block all care at Planned Parenthood —despite the fact that the majority of Americans support access to safe, legal abortion, and that the discredited attacks against Planned Parenthood continue to fall flat.
In an interview on ABC’s This Week, Clinton stated: “I’ve been on record for many years about where I stand on abortion--how it should be safe and legal. I have the same position that I've had for a very long time. But what's really going on here is an effort by the Republicans to keep pushing as far as they can to overturn Roe v. Wade. To defund Planned Parenthood. To make accusations and attacks that are really extreme.”
Let’s take a look at the real-world impact of these Republicans’ policies: In Texas, blocking access to care at Planned Parenthood led to a 35% decline in women using the most effective methods of birth control and a dramatic 27% spike in births among women who had previously had access to injectable contraception, which researchers attribute to the ban. In one year, 2.5 million people across the country rely on Planned Parenthood for care for birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings, sex education, and other preventive services. Many of them come from low-income households, communities of color, and from underserved areas where Planned Parenthood is the only available provider.
