Donald Trump isn’t alone as he continues to launch new attacks on women and their children, his running mate Mike Pence — who “would be in charge of domestic and foreign policy” if Trump is elected — keeps reminding us that women’s reproductive rights and health are on the ballot this November, and the Trump-Pence ticket is a serious danger for women and their families.
Rather, Pence focused his speech on Trump's strengths and telling the crowd about the importance of the election.
"For the sake of the rule of law, for the sake of the sanctity of life, for the sake of our Second Amendment to the Constitution, we must assure that the next president making appointments to the Supreme Court of the United States is President Donald Trump."
As governor of Indiana, Pence has signed into law restrictions on abortion that some say are the strictest in the nation. In 2015, he also signed into law a measure to allow businesses citing religious freedom to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers.
U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, said Pence took the lead to defund Planned Parenthood while serving as a congressman from Indiana.
"Because we need Mike Pence as vice president and because we need those Supreme Court nominees, those are just two of the reasons I support Donald Trump as president," Lamborn said.
That same conservatism was part of the reason Irene Luckett was one of about 10 protesters outside the rally. The 70-year-old held a sign supporting Planned Parenthood and said Pence "is a nightmare to women."
"When we heard that he was (the VP candidate), it was like our worst nightmare had come true," Luckett said.
Background on Trump-Pence threats to women’s health care:
POLITICOcalled Pence’s determination to deny patients care at Planned Parenthood health centers a “one-man crusade” and said that “nobody hates Planned Parenthood quite as much as Mike Pence.” [Politico,2/16/11]
In Congress, Pence introduced six separate measures aimed at blocking patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers. [H.R. 217,1/07/11; H.Amdt.95 to HR 1,2/17/11; H.R. 614,1/21/09; H.Amdt.389 to HR 3293,7/24/09; HR 4133,11/09/07; H.Amdt.594 to HR 3043,7/19/07]
Pence was willing to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood funding: In 2011, Pence said on Morning Joe that “of course” he was willing to “hold up this entire budget over defunding Planned Parenthood.” [Crooks and Liars,4/5/11]
Trump has said he would support shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood funding. [POLITICO, 8/14/15]
Pence wants to see Roe v. Wade overturned: In 2006, Pence said that Justice Alito should be confirmed because he would “make it possible once and for all to end Roe v. Wade.” [The Washington Post,1/24/06]
Pence has also said: “I long for the day that Roe v. Wade is sent to the ash heap of history, when we move past the broken hearts and the broken lives of the past 38 years.” [Congressional Record, Pence Floor Remarks on H. Amdt. 95 to HR 1,2/17/11]
Trump said the best way to ban abortion is “by electing me president”: “Asked on Fox News what one thing he would do to ‘protect the sanctity of life,’ Trump told host Bill O’Reilly, ‘I will protect it, and the biggest way you can protect it is through the Supreme Court and putting people on the court. Actually, the biggest way you can protect it, I guess, is by electing me president.’” [Huffington Post,5/11/16]
