Toomey Shares Trump View that Women Should be “Punished” For Seeking Care
Washington DC -- Planned Parenthood Action Fund today announced its endorsement of Katie McGinty to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate. Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s endorsement comes as 1,000 of its members from Pennsylvania and across the country are gathering in Pittsburgh over the next two days. Over the weekend, members will strengthen their organizing and advocacy skills to create real and positive change for sexual and reproductive health, rights and freedom.
Senator Pat Toomey has voted to end access to safe, legal abortion in Pennsylvania as well as voting to defund Planned Parenthood five times. Polling shows 69% of Pennsylvania voters oppose “defunding” Planned Parenthood.
“With reproductive health and rights under full attack across this country by politicians like Pat Toomey, we need leaders in the Senate to stand up for Americans’ right to access reproductive health care. Pat Toomey has voted five times to block patients from care at Planned Parenthood, opposed access to affordable birth control, and would let a woman’s boss decide whether she can access birth control. Pennsylvania women deserve better,” said Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Katie McGinty will be the leader Pennsylvania needs to protect access to care for thousands of Pennsylvania residents, close the pay gap, and expand access to care for individuals with low income.”
"I'm honored to receive the endorsement of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. In Pennsylvania, 90,000 women, men, and young people rely on Planned Parenthood health centers every year for lifesaving care — including breast cancer screenings and reproductive health services,” said Katie McGinty. “That care has been wrongly jeopardized in Congress and right here at home by Senator Pat Toomey who wants to impose some of the most extreme restrictions in the country on a woman's right to make her own health care decisions. I will always fight to protect a woman's right to choose and work to expand access to affordable health care, including birth control. Politicians in Washington like Pat Toomey simply have no business standing between Pennsylvania women and their doctors."
Katie McGinty has stood against harmful efforts to roll back access to safe, legal abortion, and believes politicians should not come between a woman and her doctor. Katie has vowed to fight to ensure Pennsylvania women have access to vital health care services, push back against political attacks to limit women’s access to reproductive health care, protect the Affordable Care Act, and ensure more Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. Katie has been outspoken about the need to close the wage gap.
Senator Pat Toomey’s record shows why he is so bad for Pennsylvania women. Toomey:
Wants to ban safe and legal abortion and said he would support the repeal of Roe v. Wade and would support putting doctors who perform abortions into jail.
Would make women pay more for birth control. Toomey called Obamacare’s birth control benefit, which ensures that women receive birth control without a copay, “ill-conceived.”
Voted five times to block patients who rely on federal funds from accessing care at Planned Parenthood while in the Senate, ignoring the impact on over 90,000 Pennsylvania women and men who rely on Planned Parenthood’s health services.
Said: “I think that Roe v. Wade was wrongly defined, wrongly decided, and I think states should be free to restrict abortion, and I would support legislation in Pennsylvania that would ban abortion, and suggest we have penalties for doctors who perform them.”
