“Laura Fjeld understands that health care decisions should be left between a woman and her doctor, without political or government interference.”
WASHINGTON, DC -- Planned Parenthood Action Fund today announced the endorsement of Laura Fjeld in her bid for the U.S. House of Representatives to fill the seat of retiring Rep. Howard Coble (NC-6), who has a 0% rating on the Action Fund’s congressional scorecard for votes he’s taken to restrict access to women’s health care. Laura is running against Mark Walker, an extreme opponent of women’s health and rights with outdated views on everything from birth control access to safe and legal abortion. The Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
“Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Laura Fjeld in her bid for the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Unlike her opponent, Laura Fjeld understands that health care decisions should be left between a woman and her doctor, without political or government interference. If elected to Congress, she will be a critical ally for women’s health and rights and the services that Planned Parenthood health centers provide to one in five women in her lifetime.”
“We are proud to stand with Planned Parenthood Action Fund in its endorsement of Laura Fjeld for Congress,” said Melissa Reed, executive director, Planned Parenthood Health Systems Action Fund. “North Carolina women and families can count on Laura Fjeld to stand up for them at home and in Washington. Now more than ever, we need leaders that will stand up against the wave of attacks that are being waged on preventive care, birth control, and safe and legal abortion. Laura will work to ensure a woman’s ability to access health care does not depend on where she lives or where she works.”
Laura has made it abundantly clear that she will stand up to protect women and families from politicians who are working to chip away at women’s access to health care. She has stated “I believe that a woman's health care options and decisions should be between a woman and her doctor. I will stand up to extremists in Washington who seem to think that government has a right to dictate a woman's health care decisions.” And she refuses to go back to the day’s when women could be charged more for health insurance, saying, “I will not allow extreme politicians and special interests to take us backwards to a time when insurance companies arbitrarily decided who could get coverage, discriminated against women based upon their gender, and could drop people just because they got sick when they needed coverage the most.”
On the other hand, according to his campaign website, Mark Walker “will work diligently to pass legislation clearly stating that all life begins at conception," which would ban all abortion and is a strong supporter of the deeply unpopular Supreme Court ruling in favor of corporations like Hobby Lobby denying their employees access to affordable birth control.
