WASHINGTON – Planned Parenthood Action Fund Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens released the following statement on tonight’s debate between President Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney, praising President Obama for his strong commitment to women’s equity and women’s health, and correcting the record on Romney’s lie about his stance on the Affordable Care Act and the birth control benefit:
“Over the past few weeks the Romney campaign has been working overtime to mislead voters about his record especially when it comes to women's health, and tonight, Gov. Romney was caught in a flat-out lie about his position on access to birth control. Just a few months ago, Mitt Romney endorsed legislation that would let bosses decide whether employees’ birth control should be covered by their insurance.
“From start to finish, Mitt Romney was condescending to women tonight – from his discussion of ‘binders full of women’ to address gender inequity in the workforce to his outright lie about his stance on whether women should have access to birth control. On the other hand, President Obama made a strong and stirring case for equity for women, for women’s access to health care, and for their ability to make their own health care decisions without interference from politicians.
“The president is the one who understands that access to birth control and women’s health care are economic issues for women and their families. Since he took office, he has done more than any president in history for women’s health, and tonight we saw a very stark contrast between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, who would take our country back not just four years, but forty years when it comes to women’s health.”
