WASHINGTON, DC -- Planned Parenthood Action Fund condemned Senator Lindsey Graham’s statement today that: "I’m going to need your help to find a way out of this definitional problem with rape." Senator Graham’s out-of-touch statement comes as the House of Representatives votes on legislation to restrict women’s access to abortion, swapping out one extreme anti-abortion measure for another in the dead of the night. Today marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.
Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Memo to Senator Graham and his allies: Women don't have a definitional problem with rape — we're really clear on what rape is. And we’re really clear that we don’t want you and your colleagues inserting politics into our personal health care decisions.
“It is appalling that the top priority of some members of Congress is to insert politics into women's health. They're switching one extreme and unpopular anti-abortion bill for another in the middle of the night — making it increasingly transparent that they are desperate to placate the extremists in their party whose real goal is to ban abortion altogether. These attacks are so dangerous, extreme, and unpopular that House Republicans are scrambling and divided.”
