First Latina Senator elected to U.S. Senate office
Washington, DC –– In a historic victory, driven by women and Latino voters, Nevada elected Catherine Cortez Masto to be the next U.S. senator –– and the first Latina senator in U.S history.
Quote from Cecile Richards, President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Congratulations to Catherine Cortez Masto on her victory and becoming the first Latina elected to the Senate in U.S. history. Catherine Cortez Masto boldly ran on an agenda to expand access to reproductive health care and implement comprehensive immigration reform, and her victory shows that Nevadan voters demand that their elected officials protect women’s health and rights and, for immigrant families, protect their ability to stay together as a family in this country. Tonight, we celebrate Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory. And tomorrow, we get to work fighting to push for immigration reform in its first 100 days and to protect access to reproductive health care for all.”
Quote from Rosita Castillo, Volunteer, Planned Parenthood Votes:
“Tonight, Latino voters made history electing the first Latina senator in U.S. history. We will not tolerate politicians who believe they have the right to interfere in our personal health care decisions. Joe Heck voted eight times to defund Planned Parenthood -- denying thousands of Nevadans, many of whom are Latino, access to the health care services they need. We look forward to working with Catherine Cortez Masto to represent the Latino community in Washington, to expand access to reproductive health care, and to fight for comprehensive immigration reform.”
