Statement from Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, on Mississippi Personhood and Mitt Romney:
“The so-called ‘personhood’ amendment in Mississippi is such an extreme government intrusion into the private lives of women and families that it could outlaw in vitro fertilization, common forms of birth control, and cancer treatment for pregnant women.
“While Haley Barbour, the Republican governor of Mississippi, questions the dangerous consequences of the Mississippi ‘personhood’ amendment, Mitt Romney, just a couple weeks ago, told FOX News that he ‘absolutely’ supported a ‘personhood’ amendment.
“A few short years ago, Mitt Romney was seeking the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts’ endorsement. Now he has completely gone to the other side and supports a ‘personhood’ amendment. This is just more evidence that Mitt Romney can’t be trusted when it comes to women’s health.
“It is clear that as more Americans, regardless of their political background, learn more about these ‘personhood’ efforts, they are as concerned as Governor Barbour because it is government gone too far.”
