“These laws are unjust, dangerous, and unconstitutional – and they will come down – either through the courts or through repealing harmful restrictions in the legislature.” -- Helene Krasnoff
Washington, D.C. – Today, with momentum from Monday’s Supreme Court landmark ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, Planned Parenthood announced a campaign to repeal unjust and dangerous abortion restrictions in eight states around the country – with more to come.
Remarks from the press call announcing this news can be found here.
Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund
"I’m proud to announce that today, in eight states, lawmakers and Planned Parenthood affiliates are launching a campaign to repeal these restrictive laws. And many more states will follow in the coming weeks.
“We spent years building infrastructure to fight these laws: working with coalition partners, organizing grassroots supporters, and getting ready for the day our momentum would reach a tipping point. That day is now.
“We will fight back state by state and law by law until every person has access to safe, legal abortion. No matter how long it takes, these laws will fall. There is power in our voices. There is power in our movement. ”
Statement from Helene Krasnoff, Senior Director of Public Policy, Litigation & Law, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Monday’s decision removed the smokescreen that politicians have been hiding behind and revealed their true motives – ending access to abortion, no matter how many women they hurt as a result. None of these laws benefit women, or protect women’s health. Instead, these medically unnecessary and unjust laws are intended and have the effect of making it harder, or in some cases impossible, for women to access safe, legal abortion.
“The Supreme Court’s articulation of the undue burden standard this week was not qualified. The Court made clear that all laws must be reviewed for whether they actually benefit women’s health or advance other state interests as well as what burdens they cause in women’s lives. These laws are unjust, dangerous, and unconstitutional – and they will come down – either through the courts or through repealing harmful restrictions in the legislature.”
The campaign is beginning in the eight states that have similar laws to those Texas restrictions struck down by Supreme Court --- Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The campaign will work with a coalition of partners and lawmakers to introduce repeal legislation, proactive legislation that expands access to safe legal abortion, and pursue litigation to strike down unjust laws.
The effects of the Supreme Court’s ruling have been reverberating throughout the country. Because of Monday’s ruling, abortion restrictions in four states have already been stopped in their tracks. The decision was met with celebration across the country from Planned Parenthood affiliates and abortion rights advocates.
A PerryUndem poll commissioned by Vox found that the majority of Americans oppose restrictions meant to shutter health centers or make it more difficult for women to access abortion, and that 70 percent of Americans don’t want to see the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade.
